For communications specifically, BU tends to have the edge in day-to-day professional access because being in Boston makes it easier to build experience alongside classes. UIUC is still very respected academically, but BU’s setting often translates more directly into communications-related opportunities.

At UIUC, the Department of Communication is a serious academic department with strong coursework in interpersonal, organizational, political, health, and mediated communication. It is a good choice for a student who wants a broad, research-grounded communication education on a large campus with lots of resources. The school also has a strong alumni base and major student organizations, which can help with leadership and practical experience.

At BU, the communications path is often especially attractive because of the university’s strong connections to media and public-facing industries, plus the advantage of being in Boston during the semester. Students can more easily access internships in public relations, marketing, journalism-adjacent work, digital media, and corporate communications without waiting for summer. That matters in this field, since employers often care a lot about clips, campaigns, internships, and professional networks.

For job preparation, BU is usually seen as more immediately career-connected for communications, while UIUC can be excellent but may require more intentional effort to reach off-campus opportunities.
