How should I choose between UIUC and USC for a communications major?

I’m a high school senior deciding between UIUC and USC, and I’m interested in studying communications. I’m trying to compare which school would offer the stronger overall fit for my academic interests and career goals in communications.

For a student focused specifically on communications careers, USC is likely the more compelling choice because its Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism is a dedicated, professionally connected communications school in Los Angeles. Its BA in Communication combines media, culture, rhetoric, and strategic communication, while proximity to major entertainment, digital-media, agency, and nonprofit employers can make semester internships and alumni networking especially accessible.

USC’s smaller private-university environment can also provide a more concentrated communications community. Annenberg students take courses alongside peers in journalism, public relations, advertising, and public diplomacy, which is useful for someone still deciding whether they want to work in media strategy, entertainment, brand communication, journalism-adjacent roles, or social-impact campaigns.

UIUC is a strong option when you want a large public research university, substantial campus resources, and potentially a much lower cost, particularly for Illinois residents. Its communication major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has a more social-science and research-oriented foundation, with opportunities to study interpersonal communication, organizational communication, health communication, rhetoric, and media effects. UIUC’s College of Media can add relevant coursework and student-media opportunities, but it is a separate academic unit from the communication major.

The practical deciding factor is cost relative to career access. A USC degree should not require an unmanageable amount of borrowing for a field where early-career salaries vary widely. But if USC’s net price is reasonably close to UIUC’s, its Annenberg curriculum, Los Angeles setting, and communications-specific professional network give it a clear edge for a student aiming at media, entertainment, public relations, advertising, or strategic communications.
