Is Virginia Tech harder to get into than NC State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that these two schools can look similar on paper, but Virginia Tech is usually a bit tougher to get into overall, while NC State can be just as hard or harder for certain majors because of how competitive some programs are. Both draw a lot of strong applicants in engineering, computer science, and other STEM fields, and both are large public universities with solid academics and school spirit. From a broad admissions standpoint, though, Virginia Tech is more often viewed as the slightly more selective of the two.

Virginia Tech also gets a very large volume of applications and has strong name recognition beyond Virginia, which pushes up competition. NC State is highly regarded too, especially in technical fields, but its admissions picture can vary more depending on the college within the university.

So the simplest answer is yes: Virginia Tech is generally harder to get into than NC State overall. But if you are applying to a popular STEM major, especially at NC State, the difference may feel much smaller than the overall comparison suggests.
