How does Virginia Tech admissions difficulty compare to Ohio State for undergraduate applicants?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Virginia Tech tends to feel more selective overall for out-of-state applicants and for high-demand majors, while Ohio State is often a bit more accessible at the university level but can still be quite competitive for certain programs. Both attract many strong applicants, but Virginia Tech usually comes across as the tougher admit in a head-to-head comparison. Ohio State’s larger size and broader enrollment make it more likely that a solid applicant is admissible there, especially if the rest of the application is steady and on target.

For an average strong student, I would usually think of Ohio State as more likely and Virginia Tech as more of a reach or high target, depending on residency and major. Residency matters a lot here. Virginia Tech gives a meaningful edge to Virginia residents, and out-of-state applicants often experience a noticeably harder process. Ohio State also values in-state applicants, but it tends to offer a somewhat wider lane for strong out-of-state students than Virginia Tech does.

Major matters too. At both schools, engineering, computer science, business, and some other popular programs are tougher than the university as a whole. Virginia Tech is especially known for demand in engineering and related fields, so applicants to those areas should be careful about assuming that solid numbers alone will be enough. If you are building a balanced list, it makes sense to treat Virginia Tech as the harder school in most cases, especially if you are out of state or applying to a crowded major.
