Is WashU or Northwestern better for journalism?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Northwestern has a true journalism school with a long-established pipeline into reporting, media, and related internships, while WashU is stronger as a broadly excellent university but does not have the same dedicated journalism infrastructure. At Northwestern, journalism is housed in Medill, and students get access to specialized coursework, student media, and alumni connections built specifically around the field. WashU can still work for media interests through English, Film and Media Studies, political science, writing, and campus publications, but it is not the place people usually point to first for undergraduate journalism training.

For reputation in journalism, Northwestern has the clear edge. Medill is a major reason students choose the school in the first place, and that matters for recruiting, mentorship, and the credibility of the program in media circles. Northwestern also benefits from being near Chicago, which gives students easier access to newspapers, magazines, broadcast outlets, digital media organizations, and internships during the academic year.

WashU offers a lot academically, but if your goal is specifically journalism, you would likely be building a more self-directed path there. That can be fine for someone interested in adjacent areas like media studies, communications, public policy writing, or documentary work. It is less ideal if you want a structured journalism curriculum, a strong reporting culture, and a school where many classmates are pursuing the same industry.

Northwestern is the better choice for journalism. WashU is an excellent university, but for journalism reputation, professional preparation, and day-to-day opportunities in media, Northwestern stands out pretty decisively.
