MIT vs Berkeley for electrical engineering: which is better for undergrad EE?

I’m trying to decide between MIT and Berkeley for electrical engineering and I keep seeing both names come up as top choices. I’m mostly interested in which school is stronger for undergrad EE in terms of teaching, research opportunities, and preparing for internships or grad school.

I know both are excellent, but I want to understand the practical difference from a student perspective.

For undergraduate electrical engineering, neither is a bad choice, but they feel quite different in practice. MIT is usually the cleaner pick for a student who wants a smaller undergraduate environment, easier access to faculty and labs early on, and a very tightly integrated engineering culture. For internships, that proximity matters in a practical way, especially if you want frequent industry exposure during the school year.

For teaching, MIT often gets the edge from students who care about smaller classes and more consistency in the undergraduate experience. Berkeley absolutely offers brilliant instruction, but as a large public university, the experience can be less hand-held, and students sometimes need to be more proactive about finding mentorship, office hours, and research openings. Some students love that independence; others prefer a structure with fewer barriers.

For grad school preparation, both are elite launchpads. MIT may feel stronger if your priorities are faculty mentorship and a smoother path into serious academic research early on. Berkeley may feel stronger if you want access to a vast set of labs and subfields and are comfortable navigating a bigger system to take advantage of them.

From a student perspective, MIT often feels more curated and personal, while Berkeley feels broader, more open-ended, and more self-directed. The real difference is less about prestige and more about whether you want intimacy and density or scale and range.
