Is MIT or Harvard better for students who want to start a company?

MIT has the more startup-centered undergraduate environment for a student who already expects to build and test a company while in college. Entrepreneurship is unusually woven into MIT’s technical culture, with many classmates pursuing product ideas alongside demanding engineering and science work. Resources such as the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship, MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund, and the student-focused delta v accelerator give founders structured routes from an early concept to customer testing and fundraising preparation.

MIT also offers an especially dense concentration of potential technical cofounders. Students can readily meet peers in computer science, AI, robotics, biotech, hardware, and design, then use campus labs, maker spaces, and nearby Cambridge networks to develop prototypes. For ventures that depend on a technically difficult product, that day-to-day access can matter more than a business course sequence alone.

Harvard is still an excellent place to start a company, particularly for founders drawn to consumer businesses, media, policy, health, education, or ventures that benefit from broad professional networks. Harvard Innovation Labs provides programming, workspace, advising, and connections across Harvard’s schools, while proximity to Harvard Business School can be valuable for finding commercially minded collaborators. Harvard’s larger undergraduate liberal-arts orientation can also be an advantage when the strongest asset is understanding people, markets, institutions, or storytelling rather than building the core technology.
