Is UVA or Santa Clara better for business majors?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and these two schools both seem like solid options for business. I’m interested in which one would generally be considered stronger for a business education and overall opportunities.
I’m especially trying to understand the basic reputation and value of each school for someone who wants to study business.

For business, UVA is usually seen as the more nationally prominent option, especially if you are aiming for a highly regarded undergraduate business program with broad name recognition across consulting, finance, and corporate recruiting. Its McIntire School of Commerce has a very strong reputation, a large alumni network, and especially strong placement on the East Coast. Santa Clara is still a respected choice, but its business strength is more regional and especially tied to Silicon Valley.
UVA tends to fit the student who wants a more established pipeline into traditional business paths and is comfortable with a larger public university environment. McIntire is one of the main reasons students choose UVA for business, and employers know the program well. The alumni base is much wider nationally, which can matter if you want flexibility across cities and industries after graduation.
Santa Clara makes more sense for the student who wants business education closely connected to tech, startups, and the Bay Area job market. The Leavey School of Business benefits from its location, and that can create very real internship access during the school year. For students interested in marketing, entrepreneurship, fintech, or business roles at tech companies, that proximity can be a real advantage.
In terms of overall reputation and long-term value specifically for business, UVA carries more weight nationally. Santa Clara has strong practical value too, especially in Northern California, but if you are asking which school is more broadly considered stronger for business, UVA has the edge.
