Which has better school spirit, Northwestern or Boston College?

Boston College has the more visible, consistent school spirit. Athletics play a bigger role in campus identity there, football Saturdays are a real event, and maroon-and-gold pride tends to show up more clearly in what students wear and how they talk about the school. At Northwestern, pride is definitely real, but it usually feels more understated and less central to daily campus culture.

One major difference is sports culture. BC has the kind of atmosphere where major games, especially football and hockey, can shape the weekend and pull in a broad chunk of the student body. The school’s Catholic, residential, and tradition-heavy environment also reinforces that shared identity, so spirit often feels built into campus life rather than something that only appears at special moments.

Northwestern has strong moments of spirit, especially around Big Ten sports and certain rivalry or basketball games, but the overall vibe is more academic, pre-professional, and dispersed. Students are often proud of Northwestern, just not always in the loud, rah-rah sense. You’re more likely to see school pride expressed through respect for the institution, student org involvement, and selective big-game turnout than through constant visible hype.

The setting matters too. BC’s campus feels more self-contained, which helps create a tighter collective energy. Northwestern has beautiful lakefront school pride, but being next to Chicago and having a student culture spread across many interests can make spirit feel less dominant on an average week.
