Should I choose Northeastern or UC San Diego for social life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is city-integrated versus campus-contained social life. Northeastern sits right in Boston, so a lot of social energy spills into the city through restaurants, concerts, internships, and nearby colleges, while UC San Diego has a more spread-out, residential feel in La Jolla and is often described as quieter on campus. If you want social life to feel built into your immediate surroundings, Northeastern usually has the edge.

At Northeastern, it is often easier to meet people through clubs, co-op conversations, and the fact that students regularly move between campus and the city. Boston also gives you a steady stream of things to do off campus, and that can make weekends feel more active. The downside is that social life can take more initiative because people are busy, career-focused, and sometimes dispersed across co-ops.

UC San Diego has a real social scene, but it tends to be less loud and less centralized. Its college system can create smaller communities, which helps with making friends, especially in your residential college, but the overall reputation is more academically focused and lower-key. A lot of students like the balance of beach access, outdoor hangouts, and student orgs, but it may not feel as naturally lively as a school in the middle of Boston.

For pure social ease, Northeastern probably feels more active and externally connected. UC San Diego can absolutely work socially, especially if you like a calmer environment and are willing to be intentional, but if your main question is which one tends to feel more social overall, I’d lean Northeastern.
