University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs University of Rochester for STEM: which is better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus flexibility. UIUC gives you the feel of a large, very established STEM powerhouse with broad name recognition in engineering and computing, huge research activity, and a deep bench of technical departments. Rochester offers a smaller, more flexible academic environment with strong science and engineering, easier cross-disciplinary exploration, and more direct access to faculty.

For broad STEM reputation alone, UIUC usually carries more weight, especially because of how visible it is in engineering, computer science, data-related fields, and large-scale research. It is one of those schools that many employers, graduate programs, and STEM students immediately recognize as a major technical institution. If someone says they want a school that is widely known first and foremost for STEM strength, UIUC tends to come to mind faster.

Rochester is still a serious STEM school, just with a different profile.
