Is Washington University in St. Louis or the University of Pennsylvania better for undergraduate business?

The University of Pennsylvania is the stronger choice for undergraduate business. The biggest reason is Wharton: Penn has one of the most established and widely recognized undergraduate business schools in the country, with a deep curriculum across finance, management, marketing, entrepreneurship, and analytics. Penn also has unusually strong recruiting pipelines for business roles, especially in finance, consulting, and related fields, and that matters a lot if career outcomes are a top priority.

Wharton is a major differentiator because it is built specifically for undergraduates who want a business education from day one. At Penn, business is not just an available path, it is one of the school’s signature strengths, with extensive course options, student clubs, faculty resources, and alumni connections centered on business. That level of infrastructure is hard to match.

Recruiting is another clear separator. Penn attracts a very large volume of employers for internships and full-time roles, particularly in investment banking, private equity, consulting, and other competitive business fields. The alumni network in those industries is exceptionally broad and active, which can make a real difference when students are looking for internships, mentorship, and early-career access.

WashU is an excellent university and its Olin Business School is well respected, but in a direct comparison for undergraduate business, it does not carry the same national weight or employer pull as Wharton. WashU can still be a very good place to study business, especially for a student who prefers its campus environment or overall culture, but on the specific question of which school is generally considered stronger for undergraduate business, Penn has the clearer edge.
