UCLA or UPenn: which is better for getting into consulting?

The biggest practical tradeoff is recruiting access versus cost and flexibility. For consulting specifically, Penn has a clearer built-in advantage because top firms recruit there very heavily, the alumni network in finance and consulting is especially concentrated, and Wharton in particular is one of the most established pipelines into MBB and other elite firms. UCLA can absolutely place students into consulting too, but the path is usually less automatic and more dependent on how proactive you are with networking, clubs, leadership, and internships.

At Penn, you are in a school that many consulting firms treat as a core target. That matters because it can mean more on-campus attention, more alumni willing to help, and a larger student culture built around case prep and structured recruiting. Even outside Wharton, Penn students benefit from that ecosystem.

UCLA has real strengths, especially if you are paying much less there or want to be on the West Coast long term. It has a strong reputation, access to Los Angeles internships, and solid placement into consulting, especially for students who perform well and plug into the right organizations early. But compared with Penn, it is typically less of a straight-line pipeline into the most competitive consulting firms.

If your question is purely which school gives the stronger overall edge for breaking into consulting, the answer is UPenn. The brand strength with consulting employers, density of relevant alumni, and more target-school-style recruiting make it the more advantageous option. UCLA becomes the more compelling choice mainly when the cost difference is substantial enough that taking on Penn’s extra expense would not make sense.
