Which is better for business, Carnegie Mellon or Columbia?
I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list and I’m interested in business, but I’m not sure how to compare these two schools for that path.
Both Carnegie Mellon and Columbia seem strong in different ways, so I want to know which one is generally considered the better choice for studying business.

For undergraduate business, Carnegie Mellon has the clearer edge because it actually offers a dedicated business school and business major through the Tepper School of Business. Columbia is excellent overall and very strong for finance-related careers, but Columbia College does not have a traditional undergraduate business major in the same way Carnegie Mellon does.
At Carnegie Mellon, Tepper gives undergrads direct access to a structured business curriculum in areas like finance, accounting, marketing, and operations. That matters if you already know you want an academic business education rather than just economics or another adjacent field. CMU also stands out for combining business with analytics, computer science, and engineering, which is especially valuable for students interested in consulting, fintech, product, or quantitative business roles.
Columbia’s biggest advantage is location and access to New York City, especially for internships, networking, and recruiting in finance. If your idea of “business” is really investment banking, asset management, or high-level corporate recruiting, Columbia’s ecosystem is extremely powerful. But academically, many Columbia undergrads interested in business end up studying economics or a related field rather than business itself.
Another real difference is culture. Carnegie Mellon tends to be more pre-professional and interdisciplinary in a practical, build-skills-first way, while Columbia leans more toward a liberal arts core with business opportunities layered around it. For a student specifically asking which school is better for studying business, that makes Carnegie Mellon the more direct and purpose-built option.
