Which is better for film, Northwestern or NYU?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep going back and forth between Northwestern and NYU for film. I know they have pretty different environments, and I’m trying to figure out which one is generally stronger for someone who wants to study film and potentially work in the industry.

I’m mostly looking for a straight comparison of the two schools for film.

For film, NYU is usually the more direct choice for a student who wants intensive, industry-facing training from the start. Tisch’s film programs are built around production, screenwriting, directing, editing, and frequent collaboration with other arts students, and being in New York puts you close to internships, sets, festivals, and alumni already working in the business.

Northwestern makes more sense for a student who wants film within a broader academic experience and may want to combine it with writing, theater, journalism, communication studies, or another field. Its strength is not just film classes by themselves, but the larger ecosystem around storytelling, performance, media theory, and student productions. That can be especially appealing if you are still deciding whether you want to focus on directing, criticism, screenwriting, media studies, or producing.

NYU is especially attractive for students who want a pre-professional environment and are excited by a city-based college experience. The pace is faster, the artistic culture is intense, and the access to working professionals is a real advantage.

Northwestern fits students who want more flexibility and a more traditional campus community. Evanston gives you a residential college experience, while still keeping Chicago nearby for internships and creative work. Northwestern also has a strong reputation in entertainment through its alumni network, especially in writing and performance, but it is less narrowly centered on film production than NYU.
