William & Mary vs Washington and Lee for small class experience

Washington and Lee has the more consistently intimate classroom experience. It is much smaller overall, classes are more often discussion-based from the start, and the campus culture is built around close faculty access in a way that tends to shape day-to-day life more strongly than at William & Mary. If your priority is regularly speaking up, being known by name, and avoiding the feel of larger intro lectures, W&L has the clearer edge.

At Washington and Lee, the scale of the school changes the rhythm of class in a noticeable way. You are more likely to see the same students across courses, professors can track your growth over multiple terms, and discussion tends to be a normal expectation rather than something that happens only in upper-level seminars. Office hours and informal faculty interaction also tend to feel more built into the student experience because there are simply fewer layers between students and professors.

William & Mary still offers a strong classroom environment, especially compared with many larger public universities, but it is not the same level of consistently small. You can absolutely build close relationships with professors there, particularly once you move beyond introductory courses and into your major, but the day-to-day experience is more mixed. Some classes will feel highly personal and seminar-like, while others, especially earlier on, can feel more like standard lecture courses with discussion sections or a larger group dynamic.

The social side of speaking in class is also a bit different. At W&L, a smaller campus and smaller classes can make participation feel more natural because the setting is less anonymous from the beginning. At William & Mary, students often describe classes as intellectually engaged, but the environment can feel a little less uniformly intimate simply because the institution is larger and the classroom experience varies more by department and course level.
