The biggest practical difference is that Duke’s campus culture is more visibly unified around athletics and residential life, while Northwestern’s social scene is usually more spread across smaller communities, the city-adjacent setting, and a less all-consuming school identity. At Duke, basketball season, Cameron Indoor, tenting traditions, and a strong residential-campus feel make school spirit hard to miss. At Northwestern, students often describe the experience as collaborative and active, but the energy is less centered on one shared campus ritual and more on clubs, friend groups, performances, and access to Chicago.

For pure school spirit, Duke has the clearer edge.
