Michigan vs Berkeley for computer science jobs: which school has better recruiting?

For computer science recruiting specifically, UC Berkeley tends to have the edge. Its location in the Bay Area puts students much closer to the largest cluster of software internships and full-time tech hiring, and Berkeley has especially deep pipelines into major tech companies and startups. The Berkeley name also carries exceptional weight in CS circles, particularly on the West Coast.

One big differentiator is simple proximity. Berkeley students can reach San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and startup hubs far more easily for internships during the school year, networking events, coffee chats, and part-time work. That matters because a lot of recruiting in tech is not just about the career fair itself, but about repeated exposure to companies, alumni, founders, and engineers nearby.

Another is employer concentration. Berkeley is one of the schools that many top tech firms consistently know well and recruit from heavily for software engineering, data, AI, and adjacent technical roles. Michigan absolutely has strong national recruiting and a very respected CS brand, but its pipelines are broader across industries and geography, while Berkeley’s are especially dense in the tech sector itself.

The startup ecosystem is also more built into Berkeley’s environment. If part of “recruiting” includes access to early-stage companies, founder networks, research commercialization, or students getting pulled into new ventures, Berkeley usually offers more of that by default. Michigan can still open doors to excellent jobs at big tech and beyond, but Berkeley more often gives CS students a higher-volume, more tech-saturated opportunity stream.
