Brown or Dartmouth for winter weather: which campus has harsher winters?

The biggest practical difference is that Dartmouth’s winter is typically longer, snowier, and more consistently severe, while Brown gets a milder New England winter because Providence is coastal. Hanover is inland in northern New Hampshire, so cold stretches tend to last longer, snow cover sticks around more, and everyday walking can feel much more wintry. Brown students absolutely deal with cold, snow, and some biting wind, but Providence usually has more mixed precipitation, more temperature swings, and generally less relentless winter conditions than Dartmouth.

For day-to-day life, Dartmouth is the one more likely to feel intense. You should expect more frequent situations where boots, a real winter coat, gloves, and comfort with walking through snow are part of normal campus life for extended stretches. At Brown, winter is still real, but it is usually easier to manage if you are coming from a place that gets cold without huge snowfall.

Wind matters a little differently at each school. Brown can feel raw and windy at times, especially because of its hillier campus and proximity to the coast, but Dartmouth’s combination of colder temperatures and more persistent snow usually makes the overall experience harsher even if a single windy Providence day feels unpleasant. The practical effect is that Dartmouth winter tends to shape routines more, while Brown winter is more often an inconvenience than a defining feature of the semester.
