Which has a more rural campus environment, Brown or Cornell?

Cornell’s Ithaca campus feels substantially more rural and nature-oriented, even though Ithaca itself is a small college city rather than an isolated rural town. Brown sits on College Hill, a leafy and attractive historic area, but it is closely connected to Providence’s streets, restaurants, businesses, and nearby neighborhoods.

At Cornell, waterfalls and gorges cut through and around campus, Cayuga Lake is nearby, and outdoor recreation is readily accessible. The campus is also large, so walks between classes can feel more spread out and scenic. Ithaca has a lively downtown and a strong student presence, but the surrounding region quickly becomes rural, with farms, wooded areas, and small towns.

Brown’s campus has quads, mature trees, and quieter residential blocks, so it does not feel like a downtown commuter campus. Still, students are only a short walk from central Providence, and the city is a much more consistent presence in everyday routines. Providence also offers easier access to a larger urban corridor, including Boston, than Ithaca does.

For the peaceful, nature-forward setting you describe, Cornell is the clearer choice. Brown can provide a beautiful campus atmosphere, but Cornell more fully delivers the sense of being surrounded by natural scenery and a smaller-city-to-rural environment.
