How many semesters am I allowed to study abroad at Amherst College?
I’m a junior starting to think about my study abroad plans for next year and I’m really interested in going abroad for an extended period. I know some colleges have strict limits on how long you can be away, so does anyone know what Amherst’s policy is?
Could I study abroad for two semesters, or is it usually limited to just one? I would love to spend a full year in a different country if possible, but I don’t want it to mess up my graduation timeline or eligibility for things like honors. If anyone has done a year abroad at Amherst (or knows the official rules), I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences.
Also, does it matter what major you’re in? I’m thinking about majoring in History if that makes a difference.

Hey there! I'm a 2018 grad who did a full year abroad in two different places (Bordeaux and Oxford). I was a math and French major.
It absolutely is possible to study abroad for 2 semesters, and you can even do it in 2 different locations if you want, but that's less common. Most people just do 1 semester in one location (usually in the Fall).
You'll have to check the history department graduation requirements, but going for a full year should be no issue. The only thing I had to do for math was to take comps abroad to be eligible to write a thesis. If I wasn't writing a thesis, I could've taken comps in my senior year. This varies by department as I didn't have to do this for French.
Best of luck!
