What kinds of questions are good to ask at an Amherst College information session?

I’m a junior trying to make the most of an Amherst College info session, but I don’t want to ask something too generic or something I could have found on the website.

I want to understand what kinds of questions actually help you learn more about the school and leave a good impression without sounding unprepared.

Ask questions that reveal how Amherst actually works day to day, not facts already posted online. The best ones usually focus on Amherst’s open curriculum, residential life, advising, and how students use the Five College Consortium, because those are some of the school’s most distinctive features. Questions that invite examples are especially useful since they tend to get more candid, informative answers than yes-or-no questions.

A strong approach is to ask about student experience in specific settings. For example: How do students usually take advantage of the open curriculum in practice, especially in their first year? What kinds of advising help students who are undecided build a coherent academic path? How easy is it to cross-register for classes at the other Five Colleges, and what kinds of students use that option most often?

You can also ask about campus culture in ways that go beyond “What is student life like?” Better versions would be: How would you describe the social atmosphere on weekends for students who are not involved in varsity athletics? What role do residence halls and common spaces play in building community? How does Amherst support students in forming close relationships with professors outside class?

If you want to leave a good impression, ask questions that show you understand Amherst’s character as a small liberal arts college with strong academic flexibility and close faculty access. Questions like What are some ways Amherst students connect academic interests with research, internships, or the Loeb Center? or What makes a student thrive here versus struggle here? show real curiosity and self-awareness.

Avoid things like average GPA, rankings, or broad questions such as “Why should I choose Amherst?” Also skip questions with obvious website answers, like basic majors offered or application deadlines. The most effective questions are specific, open-ended, and aimed at helping you picture yourself there.
