University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs Ohio State for finance: which is better for undergrad finance?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and finance is the main major I’m interested in. I know both are strong public universities, but I’m not sure which one has the better reputation and recruiting opportunities for an undergraduate finance student.

I want to choose the school that will give me the stronger overall path into finance after college.

For undergraduate finance, UIUC usually has the stronger edge in reputation and recruiting reach, especially if you want the broadest access to employers and a business program with a very established national profile. Gies College of Business is especially well known, and UIUC’s size, alumni network, and employer connections tend to translate into solid opportunities across corporate finance, consulting-adjacent roles, and some higher-end finance paths. Ohio State is still a very credible option, but for finance specifically, UIUC is more often the name that carries extra weight.

UIUC makes the most sense for the student who wants a business school environment that feels highly targeted and career-oriented from early on. If you are looking for a place where finance is a major priority, where recruiters already know the program well, and where there are many ambitious peers aiming at similar outcomes, Illinois stands out. It is also a particularly appealing pick if you may want flexibility across finance, accounting, data-oriented business work, or internships in multiple regions rather than being tied mainly to one state market.

Ohio State fits well for a student who wants a large flagship with strong school spirit, a major alumni base, and very good placement, especially into Columbus, Chicago, and other Midwest opportunities. Fisher is respected, and motivated students there do land strong finance roles. It can be an excellent choice if you are proactive, interested in using a huge alumni network, and value the overall campus experience as much as the business program itself. In some cases, cost or honors opportunities could make Ohio State the smarter personal decision even if UIUC has the slightly stronger finance brand.

If the question is purely which school gives the stronger overall path into finance, I would lean UIUC. If your offers are close in cost and you want the program with the somewhat stronger finance reputation, that is the safer pick. If Ohio State is meaningfully cheaper or offers a better scholarship package, the gap is not so large that it would automatically outweigh the financial advantage.
