Wellesley stands out for women in STEM because you would be learning in an all-women’s college with a long track record of sending graduates into science, medicine, research, and tech. It also has unusually strong cross-registration and research access through nearby institutions like MIT and Olin, so you are not limited to a small-college ecosystem. That combination can be especially appealing if you want both a supportive female academic community and access to high-level STEM resources.

UCLA’s advantage is the sheer range of opportunities. It has more built-in options across engineering, computer science, life sciences, and research labs, plus a much larger alumni network in industry and stronger proximity to major employers in Southern California. If your STEM interests are broad, highly technical, or likely to shift toward engineering or large-scale research, UCLA offers more infrastructure and specialization.

For women in STEM specifically, though, Wellesley often provides the better environment, while UCLA often provides the bigger platform. If your priority is feeling fully centered as a woman in STEM, being encouraged to lead in classrooms, and building confidence in a space designed for women’s academic development, Wellesley has a real edge. If you want the resources of a major research university and are comfortable navigating a larger, less intimate environment, UCLA may open more doors by volume alone.
