For a college brand name on a resume, is Michigan or Columbia viewed more favorably by employers?

I’m trying to think about how a school name might look later on a resume, especially for internships and first jobs. I know both are strong schools, but I keep hearing people talk about “brand name” and I’m not sure how employers actually compare them.

If someone saw Michigan or Columbia on a resume, would one generally stand out more than the other?

Columbia will usually have the stronger pure name-recognition effect on a resume, especially outside the Midwest and in fields where prestige signals matter quickly, like finance, consulting, some media roles, and certain East Coast professional circles. It is an Ivy, it is in New York City, and many employers will instantly read the name as highly elite without needing more context. If the question is only which name tends to create a bigger initial impression, Columbia has the edge.

That said, Michigan is extremely well respected by employers and can be just as strong, or stronger, in many practical hiring situations because of the size of its alumni network, the scale of recruiting, and the reputation of specific programs. Ross, engineering, computer science, and several other Michigan programs have very deep employer pipelines, and plenty of recruiters know exactly what they are getting from Michigan students.

Columbia tends to fit the student who wants the school name itself to carry a very obvious national and international prestige signal, especially in industries concentrated in New York.

Michigan fits the student who wants a school that is broadly admired by employers but also offers huge alumni reach, major school spirit, and very established recruiting into business, tech, engineering, and public sector paths. Many hiring managers will not see Michigan as a step down in any meaningful way, especially if your major or experience aligns with one of its standout programs.

So on brand name alone, Columbia is more likely to stand out at first glance. But Michigan is strong enough that your major, internships, grades, and network will usually matter more than the difference between the two names.
