UC Berkeley vs McGill for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth and reach in the U.S. tech ecosystem versus lower cost and a more straightforward path to a respected degree. For undergraduate CS, UC Berkeley has the stronger reputation overall, especially with U.S. employers, major tech recruiting, and access to startup and research opportunities tied to the Bay Area. McGill is still a very well-regarded university with a solid CS program, but it does not carry the same weight in computer science specifically as Berkeley.

Berkeley is one of the few schools that is consistently treated as a top-tier name in CS itself, not just a strong university overall. Its computer science ecosystem is unusually deep: advanced coursework, high-level research, large student tech communities, and direct proximity to Silicon Valley all reinforce each other. That matters for internships, networking, startup exposure, and being surrounded by a very large number of serious CS students.

McGill has real strengths too. It has an international reputation, strong academics, and Montreal is a good city for students, including in AI and software. For someone who wants a respected CS education at a potentially much lower price, especially if they are cost-sensitive or interested in studying or working in Canada, McGill can be a very smart option.

But if the question is which school is stronger for undergrad CS in overall reputation, Berkeley is the clearer answer. In the U.S. especially, Berkeley CS is in a different tier of recognition. That does not mean every student will have a better personal experience there, since Berkeley can be more intense and harder to navigate, but purely on CS prestige, employer perception, and breadth of opportunity, Berkeley comes out ahead.
