Which is better for economics, UChicago or Notre Dame?
I’m trying to compare these two schools for economics and keep seeing really different opinions online. I know both are strong overall, but I’m mostly wondering which one has the better reputation and academic fit for an econ major.
I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my list, so I want to understand how they compare in economics in a general sense.

The biggest practical tradeoff is intensity versus balance. UChicago has the more famous economics identity by a wide margin, with a department that is unusually central to the school’s academic culture and a curriculum known for being highly theoretical and analytical. Notre Dame also has a respected economics program, but its reputation is broader and more balanced across the university rather than being defined by econ in the same way.
In pure reputation for economics, UChicago is the stronger name. It is one of the first places people think of for econ because of its long influence on economic thought, especially in price theory, research, and graduate-level academic prestige. If you are drawn to economics as an intellectual discipline and want to be surrounded by a campus where that subject has outsized status, UChicago stands out.
In terms of academic fit, the difference matters a lot. UChicago tends to attract students who are excited by abstraction, mathematical modeling, close argument, and courses that can feel demanding even outside the major. Notre Dame’s economics program is solid and serious, but the overall environment is often seen as more traditional, community-oriented, and less defined by constant academic pressure.
For undergraduate opportunities, both can prepare students well for finance, consulting, policy, or grad school, but UChicago may offer an edge if you want to pursue research-heavy economics or eventually a PhD. Notre Dame can be especially appealing if you want strong academics without the same level of day-to-day intensity, plus a campus culture that many students find more cohesive.
So if the question is which school is better for economics in a general sense, the answer is UChicago. If the question is which school makes more sense for you as an econ major, that depends on whether you want a famously rigorous econ-centered academic experience or a strong economics education within a more balanced undergraduate environment.
