Which is better for economics, UChicago or Florida State?

UChicago is the stronger choice for economics by a wide margin. Its economics department is one of the most influential in the field, the major is unusually rigorous and theory-driven, and the university has deep connections to top research, policy, and PhD pathways. Florida State can absolutely work for economics, especially at a much lower cost, but it does not offer the same level of academic intensity, reputation in econ, or access to elite recruiting.

One major difference is the department itself. At UChicago, economics is central to the university’s identity, and undergraduates benefit from that culture through demanding coursework, mathematically serious training, and faculty working at the highest level of the discipline. If you think you may want graduate school in economics, quantitative finance, or highly selective consulting and research roles, that environment carries real weight.

Another difference is the surrounding opportunities. UChicago’s location and employer network create stronger access to research assistant roles, internships, policy institutions, and firms that actively recruit students with strong quantitative economics preparation. Florida State offers solid opportunities too, especially within the state and for students who are proactive, but the pipeline is not as nationally powerful.

The real complication is cost. If Florida State is dramatically cheaper, that matters a lot, especially if you would need significant debt for UChicago. For a student set on maximizing economics training and prestige, UChicago wins clearly. For a student weighing economics against financial reality, Florida State can be the smarter overall decision if the price gap is substantial.
