Northwestern or Brown for media careers: which is better for breaking into media?

Northwestern has the clearer edge for breaking into media. Its Medill School is one of the most established pipelines into journalism and related media work, and Northwestern also has unusually strong ties to entertainment through its alumni network in television, film, and communications. For a student who already knows they want media, the path is more built out there than at Brown.

One big differentiator is preprofessional infrastructure. Northwestern offers a much more direct media ecosystem through Medill, student publications with national visibility, campus media organizations, and a culture where internships and industry-facing work are deeply embedded. That matters in media because hiring often depends on clips, production experience, editors who know your work, and alumni who can help you get in the door early.

Another is alumni reach in specific media sectors. Northwestern is especially well represented in journalism, broadcast, entertainment, and communications, with a long track record in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and other major media markets. Brown absolutely places students into media too, especially through its strong writing culture and flexible open curriculum, but its pipeline feels less centralized and less intentionally structured around media careers.

The academic setup also points in Northwestern’s favor for this question. Brown is excellent for students who want to blend media with other fields, build an unconventional path, or explore before committing. But if the goal is a better launch into journalism, digital media, or entertainment with a stronger built-in reputation in those industries, Northwestern gives you more immediate traction.
