University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Virginia Tech for out-of-state admissions: which is harder to get into?

For an out-of-state applicant overall, UIUC is often a bit harder to get into than Virginia Tech, especially if you are applying to one of UIUC’s high-demand majors. At UIUC, admission can vary a lot by major or even by college, and programs like engineering, computer science, and business are notably tough. Virginia Tech is also selective for non-residents, but its process is usually a little less sharply major-driven at the same level as UIUC’s most competitive programs.

The student who feels the pressure most at UIUC is the one targeting a capped or very popular major. For out-of-state students, that major-specific structure makes UIUC feel less predictable and, in many cases, more difficult.

If you are comparing less selective majors, the gap may narrow, and in some cases they can feel fairly comparable. The biggest factor in this comparison is not just residency, but what you want to study.
