Is Caltech or UPenn harder to get into?

Caltech is typically harder to get into overall. It has a much smaller undergraduate class, far fewer seats to offer, and it looks for an unusually narrow academic profile centered on extremely advanced strength in math and science. That makes the pool effectively self-selecting but also especially intense.

One big differentiator is just scale. UPenn enrolls a much larger undergraduate class across multiple schools and majors, while Caltech is tiny. Even though both are highly selective, Caltech has far less room, so every admit spot is more constrained.

The other major difference is the kind of student each school wants. UPenn admits students across a wide range of academic and extracurricular interests, including business, nursing, humanities, engineering, and interdisciplinary paths. Caltech is much more specialized, and successful applicants usually show exceptional preparation in calculus, physics, research, Olympiads, or similarly high-level STEM work. That narrower bar can make it feel tougher even for students who are strong overall.

In practice, a student who is competitive for UPenn is not automatically competitive for Caltech unless their math-science profile is truly elite. UPenn is still extraordinarily difficult to enter, but Caltech’s tiny size and very specific academic focus usually make it the tougher admit in a head-to-head comparison.
