How do University of Vermont and NC State compare for internship opportunities?

The biggest practical tradeoff is ecosystem: NC State sits in one of the strongest internship markets in the country through Raleigh and the Research Triangle, while the University of Vermont offers a smaller, more personal network in and around Burlington with fewer large employers nearby. For sheer volume, employer variety, and year-round access to companies, NC State usually has the edge. Its location makes it easier to connect with tech, engineering, biotech, business, and public-sector internships without needing to leave the region.

NC State benefits a lot from being tied into Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. That means more companies recruiting on or near campus, more part-time internships during the academic year, and stronger pipelines into industries that hire interns in structured programs. This is especially noticeable in engineering, computer science, data-related fields, life sciences, and business.

UVM can still work well for internships, but the pattern is different. Burlington is a smaller market, so opportunities tend to be more limited in scale and concentrated in healthcare, environmental fields, nonprofits, education, local business, and some government or research settings. Students often do well there when they are proactive and build close relationships with faculty or local organizations, but the surrounding region does not offer the same density of employers as NC State’s.

Another difference is how easy it is to intern during the semester. At NC State, commuting to internship sites is often much more realistic because of the surrounding metro area. At UVM, students may be more likely to rely on summer internships, remote work, or a narrower local set of options.
