For internship access alone, Carnegie Mellon tends to offer the cleaner path if you are going into tech, computer science, engineering, robotics, or quantitative fields. USC can be excellent for internships too, but it is usually easier to take advantage of if you want media, entertainment, business, communications, cinema, or Southern California industry connections.

A student who wants structured recruiting into technical roles may find CMU more straightforward. Even though Pittsburgh is not as large a market as Los Angeles, CMU students are not limited to local opportunities because so much recruiting is national and school-specific.

USC fits the student who wants to build opportunities through location and networking density. Being in Los Angeles means access to a huge internship market during the academic year, not just in the summer, and USC’s alumni network is very active in helping students make connections. If you are the kind of student who wants a more obvious technical recruiting pipeline and employers coming to you, CMU has an edge. If you are energized by meeting people, using alumni connections, and leveraging a major city for in-semester opportunities, USC can feel more open-ended and practical.

So the answer depends a lot on your field. For tech and engineering, CMU usually makes internship access easier in a direct recruiting sense. For entertainment, media, and many LA-centered business paths, USC often creates more day-to-day opportunity simply because of where it is and who its network reaches.
