Is Northwestern or University College London more prestigious for a study abroad program?

For study abroad, both names carry real weight, but they signal different things. Northwestern tends to read as an elite U.S. private university with a strong overall brand, while University College London carries exceptional international and research prestige, especially in Europe and in globally oriented fields. On a résumé, neither will look weak, so the more meaningful question is which audience you want the name to resonate with.

Northwestern is a strong pick if you want the clearest recognition among U.S. employers, graduate programs, or people who are most familiar with American universities. If your home institution and future plans are mostly in the United States, Northwestern may feel more immediately legible.

UCL makes a particularly strong impression if you want a globally recognizable academic name and a university known for serious research. It is one of London’s major universities, and its location can add an extra layer of credibility for students interested in international policy, global health, history, architecture, urban studies, or any field where being in London connects directly to the subject. For employers or schools with an international outlook, UCL can look every bit as prestigious as Northwestern, and sometimes more so.

For study abroad specifically, prestige matters a little less than whether the program itself seems rigorous and relevant. A semester at Northwestern through a lighter, insulated program will not automatically outshine a well-structured UCL experience with demanding coursework and strong location-based learning, and the reverse is also true.

If you are deciding mainly on résumé value, Northwestern usually has the edge for U.S.-centric recognition, while UCL often carries broader international academic prestige.
