UC Berkeley vs University of Rochester for undergraduate science research opportunities

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and the University of Rochester and I’m most interested in doing science research as an undergraduate. Both schools seem strong academically, but I’m not sure how accessible research is for first- and second-year students.

I want to understand which school is generally better for getting involved in lab work, finding faculty mentors, and building research experience as an undergrad.

At Berkeley, many students do get involved in research as undergrads, but the process can feel less structured and more self-directed. At Rochester, students often find the faculty mentoring piece more approachable from the start.

If your priority is the strongest overall science research environment and you are confident you will advocate for yourself in a large, competitive setting, Berkeley has the edge. If your priority is early access to faculty, a somewhat easier entry into lab work, and a more personal undergraduate experience, Rochester is likely the better choice for undergraduate research specifically.
