What are my chances of getting into the Rice BS/MD program?
I'm planning to apply to the Rice/Baylor BS/MD program next fall and I’m seriously wondering what the actual admission process is like for regular students. I’ve read that it’s super competitive, but I haven’t met anyone who’s applied or gotten in, so it’s hard to gauge what kinds of stats and extracurriculars successful applicants have.
My stats are a 1550 SAT and a 4.0 GPA, and I have a mix of clinical volunteering, shadowing, and some research from last summer. I also started a health outreach club at my school. Do I need to have some crazy medical internship or awards, or do they look more for passion and commitment?
If anyone has any advice or experience with this program, especially what made your application stand out (or what you think they care most about), I’d really appreciate it.

Unfortunately, the Rice/Baylor BS/MD program accepted their last cohort of applicants in 2022 and has since closed. You can see articles about this closure here (https://www.berkeley2academy.com/single-post/rice-baylor-discontinues-their-bs-md-program-what-does-this-mean-for-you) and here (https://www.prospectivedoctor.com/why-bs-md-programs-close/).
More broadly speaking, it sounds like you have the makings of a strong application! If you are interested in other BS/MD programs, I suggest following up on your existing extracurriculars—you can do this by continuing with those experiences (ideally in a leadership position) or by seeking new experiences that share a common theme with what you've already done. With some research and clinical volunteering under your belt, you're already in a strong position! Medical internships and awards help, but they are not absolutely necessary. I have had several students receive admissions to a few BS/MD programs without those additions to their applications.
I am sorry your program of choice has closed, and I wish you good luck on your continued admissions journey!
