Is UCLA considered more prestigious than Boston University for college applications and resumes?

The biggest practical tradeoff is broad name recognition and public flagship prestige at UCLA versus Boston University’s strong private-school reputation and city-based professional access. For many employers and grad programs, UCLA has the more immediately recognizable national and international brand, especially because it is a highly visible UC campus with strength across many disciplines. BU is also very well respected, but it is less likely to produce an instant “top public university” reaction in the same way.

On resumes, the difference is usually not dramatic enough to decide outcomes by itself. In most fields, employers care more about your major, internships, research, grades, and what you actually did in college than about a small prestige gap between two well-known universities. Grad schools work similarly: they will care a lot about academic performance, recommendations, and fit with the program, not just the institution name.

Program and field matter a lot here. UCLA tends to carry especially strong weight in areas tied to research, STEM, pre-med, film/media, psychology, and many social sciences and humanities. BU has real strength in business, communications, international relations, journalism, health-related fields, and because of its Boston location, it can feel especially connected to internships and professional networks during the school year.

If the question is purely “which name has more overall prestige,” UCLA probably has the edge in the broader public conversation and on a national resume read. If the question is “will that edge matter enough to outweigh program fit, cost, and opportunities,” the answer is often no.
