Should I choose UCLA or Washington University in St. Louis for college?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and environment: UCLA offers a huge, energetic public university experience in Los Angeles, while WashU offers a smaller, more contained private-campus experience with more day-to-day structure and easier access to faculty. UCLA has broader name recognition, especially on the West Coast and internationally, and a much larger student body, alumni network, and course ecosystem. WashU tends to feel more personal and residential, with smaller classes sooner and a campus culture that is often described as more collaborative and less sprawling.

Academically, both are excellent, but they feel different in practice. UCLA is especially strong across a wide range of fields and can be a great place if you want lots of options, interdisciplinary freedom, and the energy of a major research university. WashU is also research-heavy, but the undergraduate experience is often more curated, which can matter if you know you learn best with closer advising and a campus where it is easier to feel known.

The social atmosphere is different too. UCLA is tied closely to the city, with access to internships, entertainment, food, and West LA life built into the experience, but that also means more independence and more effort to carve out a smaller community. WashU is more campus-centered, and many students find it easier to settle into routines, friendships, and student organizations because the environment is more self-contained.

For long-term value, neither choice shuts doors. UCLA can carry extra weight in California and in industries tied to LA, and its alumni base is enormous. WashU can be especially appealing if you want a more intimate undergraduate experience without giving up prestige or strong outcomes.

Students who are excited by a big, fast-moving environment and want the opportunities of LA usually end up happier at UCLA. Students who want more personal attention, a somewhat calmer campus rhythm, and a private-school feel often find WashU more satisfying over four years.
