MIT vs. Williams for engineering: which is better for an undergrad engineering student?
I’m trying to figure out which school would be the better fit for engineering as an undergraduate. MIT seems obvious for engineering, but Williams has a strong academic reputation and I’ve heard the smaller size can matter a lot.

MIT is the stronger undergraduate choice for engineering. It has a much broader set of engineering departments and labs, far more classmates and faculty focused specifically on engineering, and a campus culture built around hands-on technical work from day one. Peer environment matters a lot in engineering, and MIT has a clear edge there too. You would be surrounded by a large concentration of students who are intensely interested in building, coding, prototyping, and solving technical problems, which shapes both classes and extracurriculars. Williams offers smaller classes and closer advising, which many students love, but for engineering in particular, the peer ecosystem is simply less extensive.
Williams does have one real advantage: if you want a liberal arts setting with very small classes, close professor relationships, and a broader academic experience alongside engineering, it can be appealing. But if your main question is which school offers the better undergraduate engineering experience itself, MIT is the more compelling option by a wide margin.
