University of Washington vs University of Texas at Austin for engineering: which is better for undergrad?

I’m a high school junior looking at engineering programs and these two schools keep coming up for me. I know both are strong overall, but I’m trying to understand how they compare for an undergraduate engineering student in terms of academics, internships, and overall opportunities.

I’m mainly interested in which one tends to be the stronger choice if I want a solid engineering education and good career prospects after college.

In practice, both can get you to excellent outcomes, but the texture of recruiting is a bit different: UT feels broader across traditional engineering industries, while UW stands out most clearly in the tech-heavy Pacific Northwest environment.

One thing I would weigh carefully is major access and internal flexibility. At both schools, engineering is competitive. That matters because the undergraduate experience can feel very different depending on how secure your spot is in the discipline you actually want.

If the question is simply which has the slight edge for undergraduate engineering overall, I’d give it to UT Austin. It has a broader all-around engineering profile, a very strong employer network, and a particularly robust identity as an engineering school. I would lean toward UW instead only if Seattle’s tech ecosystem or a more computing-connected engineering path is a central part of what you want.
