University of Washington vs University of Colorado Boulder for computer science: which is better for undergrad?

For undergraduate computer science, University of Washington has the edge. Its CS program is one of the most respected public-school options in the country, and Seattle gives students unusually direct access to major tech employers like Microsoft and Amazon along with a dense startup scene. That combination tends to matter a lot for internships, recruiting volume, and overall employer visibility.

The first big differentiator is the CS department itself. UW’s Paul G. Allen School has a stronger national reputation in computer science and is especially well known in areas like systems, AI, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and theory. For an undergrad, that usually translates into deeper course offerings, more research-active faculty, and a larger peer group centered specifically on computing.

The second is location. Being in Seattle is a real advantage for internships during the school year, not just in the summer. Students at UW can reach major tech companies much more easily for part-time work, recruiting events, and networking, and employers already have established pipelines there. Boulder has a solid tech presence and plenty of opportunities, but it does not match Seattle’s scale or concentration of top-tier software recruiting.

The third is employer perception. A CS degree from UW tends to carry more weight nationally within tech hiring, especially among companies that recruit heavily for software engineering and related roles. Colorado Boulder is a respected university and can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, but in pure CS brand strength and recruiting reach, UW is usually operating from a higher starting point.

One practical catch is that UW can be more complicated for admission to computer science depending on how you apply and whether you are admitted directly to the major. That matters because the school is strongest when you are actually in the CS pathway you want.
