Which is better for internships, UChicago or Columbia?

The biggest practical tradeoff is New York City versus Hyde Park. Columbia’s location makes in-semester internships much easier because you are in Manhattan with direct access to finance, media, publishing, nonprofits, startups, arts organizations, hospitals, and major research institutions. UChicago has excellent academic and professional opportunities too, but Chicago internships are usually a bit less embedded into day-to-day campus life, and commuting can matter more.

For sheer convenience and volume of options during the school year, Columbia has an edge. Students can often fit part-time internships into a normal week more easily, especially in industries that cluster heavily in New York like finance, journalism, public relations, fashion, and some tech-adjacent roles. The university also benefits from alumni density in the city, which can help with networking and informational conversations.

UChicago is still very strong, especially for economics, policy, consulting, research, and certain finance paths. Chicago is a major city with real internship access, and UChicago has serious employer credibility, but Hyde Park is more separate from downtown than Columbia is from Manhattan’s internship hubs. That changes the feel of undergraduate life: at Columbia, outside opportunities can become part of the weekly routine more naturally.

Campus culture matters too. Columbia students often take advantage of the city in a more outward-facing way, while UChicago’s culture is more centered on the campus and academic community. That does not mean UChicago students lack internships, only that Columbia tends to make external involvement easier to act on quickly.

If your main question is which school makes internships easier to find and actually do during the academic year, Columbia is the clearer answer. If you care more about a deeply campus-centered undergraduate experience and are comfortable being more intentional about travel and planning, UChicago still offers excellent outcomes, but it is not quite as frictionless for internships as Columbia.
