Is Rice or Tulane more fun for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Rice has a more campus-centered, close-knit social life built around its residential colleges, while Tulane’s fun is tied much more to New Orleans and a louder, more outward-facing party scene. Rice students often describe the social culture as quirky, community-based, and very active on campus, with traditions, college events, and easy ways to know people across all four years. Tulane is more often associated with going out, city nightlife, festivals, and a student culture that feels more extroverted and less contained by campus.

If you mean “fun” in the broadest, most visibly social sense, Tulane is usually the school people point to first. Being in New Orleans changes the undergraduate experience a lot, and students who like restaurants, music, off-campus events, and a more traditional party atmosphere often see Tulane as the more exciting environment day to day.

Rice is not socially dead at all, but the energy is different. A lot of student life happens through the residential college system, which gives the campus a strong built-in community and a lot of traditions. Students who want friends close by, recurring campus events, and a social scene that does not depend on going out every weekend often find Rice more enjoyable than they expected.

There is also a personality difference. Tulane tends to attract students who want a spirited, outgoing atmosphere and are comfortable with a social culture that can feel more visible and nightlife-oriented. Rice tends to attract students who still want fun, but in a more self-contained, slightly nerdier, and often more intimate setting.

So in terms of what students usually mean by “more fun,” Tulane has the stronger reputation. But plenty of undergrads would honestly have more fun at Rice if they prefer a tight campus culture over a city-driven social scene.
