University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs University of Michigan campus size: which one feels bigger?

The main tradeoff is this: UIUC tends to feel more spread out across a flatter, broader campus, while Michigan often feels denser and more divided into distinct zones. Day to day, many students experience Illinois as physically larger because Urbana-Champaign stretches across a wide area and blends into two towns, even though Michigan is also a very large university. Ann Arbor’s central campus can feel more compact for everyday movement, but Michigan’s separate North Campus adds a layer of distance if your classes or activities are split.

UIUC has a big, open-campus feel with long sightlines, wide streets, and academic buildings spread across a substantial grid. It is very walkable, but not especially tight or compressed, so trips can feel longer simply because things are more dispersed. The campus also flows into both Champaign and Urbana, which can make the whole environment feel expansive rather than clearly bounded.
