UC Berkeley vs Virginia for economics: which is better for undergrad econ?
I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and the University of Virginia for economics. I’m mainly interested in which school has the stronger undergraduate econ program and better opportunities for learning the subject in a serious way.
I care most about the major itself, not just overall campus reputation, and I want to understand which one is generally considered the better choice for econ.

UC Berkeley has the edge for undergraduate economics. Its economics department is one of the most prominent in the country, the course selection is especially deep, and the surrounding academic environment gives undergrads unusually strong exposure to high-level economic research and policy work.
One major difference is the scale and intensity of Berkeley’s economics ecosystem. Berkeley offers a broader range of upper-division economics classes and related quantitative options, which matters if you want to study the subject seriously rather than just complete a standard major. The department’s visibility also means more chances to learn from faculty whose work shapes the field, even if access to the most sought-after classes can sometimes require planning.
Another concrete advantage is how easy it is at Berkeley to connect economics with adjacent areas that strengthen an econ education, especially mathematics, statistics, computer science, and public policy. For undergrads interested in theory, data analysis, or eventual grad school, that cross-campus depth is a real asset. Berkeley also benefits from being in the Bay Area, where research institutes, policy organizations, and economic consulting opportunities are plentiful.
Virginia is still excellent, and one area where it can appeal more is the undergraduate experience itself. UVA often feels more intimate and structured for undergrads, and some students find it easier to build close faculty relationships there. But on the question of which school is more widely regarded as the stronger place to study economics at the undergraduate level, Berkeley is the clearer answer.
