Is NYU or Berkeley considered more prestigious by employers and graduate schools?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Berkeley has broader across-the-board academic prestige, while NYU’s reputation is more uneven but very strong in a few fields and in New York–centered industries. Employers and graduate schools usually recognize Berkeley immediately as a top public research university with serious academic rigor. From a pure reputation standpoint, Berkeley usually carries more universal weight. Graduate schools in particular tend to view Berkeley very favorably because of its research strength, faculty reputation, and long-established standing across STEM, social sciences, humanities, and economics. Outside the U.S., Berkeley often has especially strong name recognition as well.

For employers, the answer is a little more field-specific. In tech, engineering, computer science, data science, and many research-oriented areas, Berkeley often has the stronger brand. In finance, consulting, media, entertainment, and some business circles, NYU can be just as impressive, especially if the comparison is Berkeley overall versus a specialized NYU program like Stern or Tisch.

One reason you hear mixed opinions is that people often compare NYU’s best-known divisions to Berkeley as a whole. That can make NYU sound stronger than it is overall. Berkeley’s name tends to be more consistently prestigious across departments, while NYU’s reputation is more concentrated in certain professional and urban-industry pipelines.

So if the question is simply which name carries more prestige with employers and graduate schools in the broadest sense, Berkeley has the edge. NYU is absolutely respected and can match or beat Berkeley in a few specific lanes, but Berkeley is more likely to be seen as the heavier academic brand overall.
