Is UMass Amherst or Fordham more fun for college life?

For most students looking for a classic, active college social scene, UMass Amherst tends to feel more fun. It has a true big-campus atmosphere, major school spirit around athletics, lots of student activity on and around campus, and a weekend culture that is built around undergrads staying nearby. Fordham can absolutely be fun too, but the experience is more city-based and depends more on how much you want to make use of New York rather than campus life itself.

UMass Amherst fits someone who wants college to feel like a full environment, not just a place to take classes. There are tons of students around, a strong residential feel, big events, clubs, dining halls people actually talk about, and easy access to other students on weekends. Amherst also sits in the Five College area, so there are concerts, parties, campus events, and a broader student scene beyond just UMass.

Fordham is a better match for someone who finds “fun” in having the city available all the time. At the Rose Hill campus, you get a traditional campus in the Bronx, but student life is still shaped by New York: restaurants, internships, concerts, neighborhoods, and off-campus plans. That can be exciting, but it is less of the all-in campus bubble you get at UMass, and weekends can feel more fragmented because students often disperse into the city or go home.

If your idea of fun is spontaneous dorm life, packed student sections, easier group socializing, and a stronger sense that the whole school is sharing one experience, UMass Amherst usually wins that comparison. If your idea of fun is exploring the city, finding your own scene, and building a social life that is less campus-centered, Fordham has a different kind of appeal.
