Which has better student life, UMass Amherst or Purdue?

I’m a high school senior comparing UMass Amherst and Purdue, and student life is one of my biggest factors. I’m trying to understand which campus generally offers a stronger social atmosphere and more opportunities to get involved outside the classroom.

For a senior prioritizing a lively, varied social atmosphere, UMass Amherst has the edge.

The biggest differentiator is the surrounding college environment. Amherst is a walkable New England college town with coffee shops, restaurants, music, and frequent student activity.

Purdue has an energetic student life of its own, particularly for students drawn to engineering, aviation, business, gaming, athletics, Greek life, and large student organizations. The campus has extensive clubs, major school-spirit events, and a highly involved residential community, but its social scene tends to be more centered on Purdue itself and the West Lafayette campus area. Students often find close communities there through their academic program, housing, cultural organizations, or project teams.

UMass is likely to feel more naturally social to someone who wants variety, arts and music, a traditional college-town setting, and easy ways to meet people outside their major. Purdue can be more compelling for someone who wants a structured, high-energy campus culture tied closely to technical interests, big-time school traditions, and hands-on organizations.
