Which is better for business, UMass Amherst or Fordham University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Fordham gives you direct access to New York City internships and finance-heavy networking during the school year, while UMass Amherst tends to offer a larger public-university experience with a strong business school reputation and usually better value, especially for in-state students. For business specifically, both are credible options, but they help students in different ways. Fordham benefits from location and proximity to employers, and UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management is especially well known and broadly respected in undergraduate business.

If you mean “stronger” in terms of undergraduate business reputation alone, UMass Amherst has a very solid edge because Isenberg is one of the school’s standout programs and draws a lot of attention from students specifically seeking business. It has strength across common business majors and a large alumni base. Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business is also well regarded, especially for students interested in finance, accounting, and careers tied closely to New York.

For career opportunities, Fordham’s location is the clearest advantage. Being in New York makes part-time internships, employer events, and networking much easier to build into the academic year. That can matter a lot if you are aiming at finance, consulting, marketing, media-related business roles, or firms that recruit heavily in the city.

UMass Amherst can still place students very well, but the path is a bit different. It relies more on the strength of Isenberg, recruiting pipelines, alumni, and summer internships rather than everyday proximity to employers. Students who are proactive still do very well, but the opportunities are not sitting outside campus in the same way they are at Fordham.

The practical answer for most students is that UMass Amherst is the safer all-around business choice, especially if cost matters or you want a strong flagship-university experience with a standout business program.
