UCLA vs MIT for engineering research: which is better for an undergraduate?
I’m a high school student interested in doing engineering research as an undergrad, and I’m trying to understand the difference between UCLA and MIT for that path.
I know both schools are strong, but I want to know which one is generally better for getting involved in research early and building a strong engineering research experience.

The biggest practical tradeoff is access style: MIT is built around undergraduate involvement in research from the start, while UCLA offers excellent engineering research but at a much larger public university where students usually need to be more proactive to break in early. But because UCLA is bigger and less uniformly centered on undergraduate research than MIT, there is often more variation in how quickly a student gets traction.
Another difference is research environment. MIT tends to feel more intensely focused on engineering and hands-on technical problem solving across campus, so it can be easier to find peers, labs, and classes all reinforcing that same direction. At UCLA, you still get a top-tier research university, but with a broader campus experience and more competition for some faculty attention simply because of scale.
